STATEMENT: JMBF Vehemently Condemns Religious Disruption at JM Sen Hall Puja Mandap, Chittagong

Paris, France; October 11, 2024 – JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) vehemently condemns the shocking and deliberate disruption of religious harmony at the JM Sen Hall Puja Mandap in Chittagong on October 10, 2024. Six members of the Chittagong Cultural Academy, a group linked to the Islamic fundamentalist political party Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, infiltrated the celebration of Durga Puja—a major Hindu religious event—under false pretenses. After deceptively obtaining permission to perform patriotic songs, they audaciously staged an Islamic musical performance in the middle of a dance show during the Hindu religious program.

JMBF demands the immediate arrest of all individuals involved in this heinous act, followed by exemplary punishment through a transparent and impartial legal process. The perpetrators must face the full force of the law for their role in inciting division and undermining the sanctity of religious freedom.

Robert Simon, prominent French human rights activist and Chief Adviser of JMBF stated, "This blatant act of disrespect, committed on a stage meant for the celebration of Durga Puja, is not only an insult to the religious beliefs of the Hindu community but an attack on the very principles of religious tolerance and coexistence. Such an offense carried out during one of the most important religious festivals of Bangladesh’s minority Hindu population is utterly reprehensible and cannot be tolerated in a society that values pluralism and peace."

Advocate Shahanur Islam, prominent human rights lawyer and Founder-President of JMBF, added, "This incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges facing religious minorities in Bangladesh. We call on all political and community leaders to strongly condemn this attack on religious harmony and work together to foster mutual respect and unity."

JMBF appeals to the government and law enforcement authorities to ensure that members of the minority Hindu community can conduct their religious activities without fear, intimidation, or interference. It is the responsibility of the state to provide a safe and secure environment where all citizens, regardless of faith, can worship freely.

Religious freedom is a cornerstone of any civilized society, and any attempt to infringe upon it must be met with swift and decisive action. JMBF stands in solidarity with the Hindu community and all minorities in Bangladesh who are striving for their right to worship and live in peace.

Thank you,
