STATEMENT: JMBF Gravely Concerned About the Recent Rise in Mob Violence and Lynchings in Bangladesh

Paris, France | October 06, 2024:
JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) expresses grave concern and alarm over the sharp rise in mob violence and lynchings in Bangladesh following the political upheaval triggered by the fleeing of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, and the subsequent establishment of an interim government under Dr. Muhammad Yunus on August 8, 2024.

JMBF urgently calls on Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, to take immediate and decisive action to halt all forms of mob violence and lynchings. JMBF also calls for an investigation into these gross human rights violations, led by judicial officials headed by judges from the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. A transparent tribunal must be established to ensure that those responsible—both directly and indirectly—face exemplary punishment to uphold justice.

Reports from various newspapers, citing the Manabadhikar Songskriti Foundation, highlight a disturbing surge in mob attacks and lynchings following the political transition. In August and September alone, 53 such incidents were reported, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 44 people. The month of September 2024 alone saw 33 mob attacks, resulting in 24 deaths and 22 serious injuries.

Robert Simon, prominent French human rights activist, and Chief Adviser to JMBF, stated, "This outbreak of lawlessness is a blatant violation of fundamental human rights and the principles of justice. Mob lynchings, driven by frustration and a breakdown of law and order, represent a grave threat to democracy, the rule of law, and basic human dignity."

Advocate Shahanur Islam, Founder President of JMBF, added, "The rising tide of mob justice in Bangladesh is a direct consequence of a failing system. No society can claim to be just or humane if it allows mob violence to replace due process and the rule of law. We call on the interim government and law enforcement agencies to take immediate and decisive action to prevent further bloodshed."

JMBF believes this troubling trend reflects not only a failure in governance but also a critical erosion of public trust in the state’s ability to deliver justice. It is the responsibility of the interim government and law enforcement agencies to protect all citizens, restore public confidence, and ensure that no individual or group is subjected to extrajudicial killings. Justice cannot, and must not, be delivered by the mob.

Furthermore, JMBF insists that the recent surge in mob lynchings in Bangladesh is a stark reminder of the urgent need to strengthen legal institutions and promote respect for human rights. Violence and lawlessness have no place in a civil society. The interim government has to safeguard the rule of law. We stand in solidarity with the victims of these horrific attacks and demand immediate justice and accountability for those responsible.

JMBF strongly urges the Bangladeshi authorities to act swiftly to curb this wave of violence. We call for the prosecution of those involved in these heinous crimes and demand comprehensive measures to prevent further mob lynchings.

JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) will continue to advocate for victims' rights, hold governments accountable, and work toward a Bangladesh where justice is delivered through legal institutions, not violence.

Thank you
