STATEMENT: JMBF Deeply Condemns and Calls for Justice Regarding the Tragic Violence in Bangladesh

Paris, France: August 04, 2024: JusticeMakers Bangladesh Foundation (JMBF) strongly condemns the atrocious acts of violence, including death, injury, and vandalism, that have erupted in Bangladesh today, August 04, 2024.

According to news published in various newspapers in Bangladesh, at least 98 people, including 14 policemen, have died, and countless others were injured in day-long clashes between protesters supported by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its affiliated wings, other opposition parties, police, and the ruling party Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated wings. These clashes centered on the non-cooperation movement called by Students Against Discrimination (SAD).

The clashes rocked every corner of the country after the platform rolled out its one-point demand seeking the resignation of the current government. Thousands of protesters took to the streets and engaged in pitched battles against police officers and ruling party activists. The fighting started in the morning and continued throughout the day across the country.

At least one journalist was killed, and 23 were injured during the clashes. In Sirajganj, agitated protesters attacked the Royganj Upazila Press Club and beat Prodip Kumar, the upazila representative of Daily Khabarpatra. He later died in the hospital during ongoing treatment.

In Sirajganj district, at least 22 people, including 13 policemen, died. The police officers were beaten to death inside Enayetpur police station after protesters torched the station. One policeman was killed in Cumilla’s Eliotganj by the protesters.

In Dhaka, 13 people died, including one Awami League leader and four student protesters. Eight people died in Feni and Lakshmipur each, while six leaders and activists of the ruling AL were beaten to death by the protesters after they opened fire at the demonstrators in Madhabdi Upazila in Narsingdi.

Five people died in each of Bogura, Sylhet, and Kishoreganj; four each in Rangpur and Magura; three each in Pabna, Munshiganj, and Cumilla; two each in Sherpur and Joypurhat; and one each in Habiganj, Barishal, Gazipur, Bhola, and Cox's Bazar.

Many houses of ruling Awami League leaders and lawmakers, as well as AL offices, ward councilor offices, police stations and outposts, police vehicles, hospital buses, and prison vans, were torched or vandalized throughout the day.

At least five garment, textile, and plastic factories—Sinha Textile, Beximco Synthetics, a warehouse of scrapped clothing items (jhoot) of Ha-Meem Group, and Bengal Plastic at Zirani in Ashulia—were set on fire, and three more were vandalized in Narayanganj.

JMBF expresses profound sorrow and outrage over the senseless brutality that has caused immense suffering and disruption in the lives of many innocent people and calls for immediate and decisive action to restore peace.

JMBF urges the authorities to take swift and effective measures to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent such incidents under the direct supervision of the United Nations.

JMBF also calls on all citizens, civil society organizations, and international communities to join hands in condemning this violence and working towards a peaceful and just society in Bangladesh.

JMBF stands in solidarity with the affected families and communities and remains committed to advocating for justice, human rights, and the rule of law.
