STATEMENT: JMBF Condemns the Arrests of Ansar Members and Calls for Peaceful Resolution

Paris, France; August 27, 2024: JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) expresses deep concern regarding the recent arrest of Ansar members during their demonstration advocating for job nationalization, following violent clashes with students, who are a key force in the current interim government in Bangladesh.

JMBF urges that all arrested individuals be released unconditionally and afforded fair and transparent legal proceedings. We insist that their rights be upheld per international human rights standards and that any legal actions taken be conducted impartially.

According to reports, 377 Ansar members were arrested and sent to jail custody on August 26, 2024, following their democratic movement, which led to clashes resulting in at least 50 injuries. The violence erupted during a demonstration advocating for job nationalization. The Ansar members had been conducting a peaceful protest by blocking the Secretariat gates and the National Press Club for the past two days. The situation escalated around 9:20 pm on August 25 when students, some armed with sticks, attempted to disperse the demonstrators. The confrontation intensified as over a thousand students converged on the Secretariat, leading to chases and counter-chases between the Ansar members and the students. Reports also indicate that dispersed Ansar members were subsequently attacked by groups in various locations.

Robert Simon, Chief Adviser of JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), stated, "The arrest of Ansar members amidst the recent democratic demonstration is deeply concerning. Such actions only exacerbate tensions and hinder the path to resolution. True justice demands that we address grievances through dialogue and due process, not through indiscriminate detention. It is imperative that all arrested individuals receive fair treatment and that their rights are fully upheld."

Advocate Shahanur Islam, Founder President of JMBF, added, "Conducting peaceful assembly and demonstration is a human right for all citizens, which can not be undermined by the government or their aligned force. In these turbulent times, our commitment to justice and human rights must remain unwavering. The use of force and the widespread arrests only serve to deepen divisions and obstruct the path to peace. We must resolve conflicts through dialogue, fairness, and respect for all parties involved, ensuring that justice is served without further inflaming the situation."

JMBF condemns the use of force and violence by all parties involved and calls for addressing the underlying issues. The root causes of the conflict, including demands for job nationalization and anti-discrimination measures, must be addressed through genuine dialogue and meaningful reforms.

JMBF also urges that the rights and dignity of all individuals involved, including peaceful protesters and law enforcement officers, be respected. Ensuring the safety and respect of all parties is crucial in resolving the conflict.

JMBF stands in solidarity with those advocating for justice and equality. We urge all stakeholders to work towards a peaceful resolution that upholds democratic principles and human rights.

Thank you,
