STATEMENT: JMBF Urges UN Investigation into Recent Deadly Violence in Bangladesh

Paris, France; July 26, 2024: JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) expresses profound concern and demands justice for the victims of the recent surge of violence across various regions of Bangladesh.

As of today, the violence has tragically resulted in the deaths of over 203 citizens, including students and children, and has caused widespread injuries and extensive damage to both private and public property. This violence not only disrupts daily life but also undermines the principles of peace, justice, and human rights in Bangladesh.

JMBF calls for a comprehensive investigation into all incidents of killings, injuries, and property damage, under the direct supervision of the United Nations and international human rights experts. We also advocate for exemplary punishment for the alleged perpetrators through prompt and impartial trials, with the establishment of a special tribunal based on the investigation's findings.

Additionally, JMBF emphasizes the need for physical and psychological support for the victims and their families, including adequate financial compensation and assurance of their physical security.

According to reports from national and international media and reliable sources, JMBF has learned that the unrest began as a peaceful protest by students demanding quota reform. It escalated into nationwide clashes following attacks by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), an organization affiliated with the ruling Bangladesh Awami League, and the unprovoked killing of unarmed students by police.

The government's response, which included imposing a curfew, issuing shoot-on-sight orders, and enforcing a communications blackout, has further exacerbated the situation. Law enforcement agencies, including the police, BDR, RAB, and the Army, have used excessive force and lethal weapons to control the unrest.

JMBF has previously issued statements on July 15 and 17, 2024, highlighting the need for a peaceful resolution and the protection of citizens' rights.

Advocate Shahanur Islam, Founder and President of JMBF, strongly condemns the use of excessive force and lethal weapons by law enforcement agencies to suppress freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. He highlighted that even in armed conflicts, unarmed individuals and injured persons are typically spared from being shot.

However, recent video footage reveals Bangladeshi police deliberately killing unarmed student protesters at close range during peaceful demonstrations and assemblies, as well as targeting injured protesters during rescue attempts. This deliberate and unprovoked violence is both alarming and unacceptable, representing clear violations of human rights and crimes against humanity that must not go unpunished.

JMBF urges the Bangladeshi government to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, withdraw the curfew, lift the communications blackout, and engage in constructive dialogue with the protesters.

We also call on all parties, including students, the government, and political entities, to exercise maximum restraint and engage in peaceful dialogue to resolve conflicts. Violence only deepens divisions and impedes national progress and development.

JMBF extends heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives or been injured in these tragic events. We stand in solidarity with the victims and their families during this painful time.

JMBF encourages civil society organizations, community leaders, and all stakeholders to unite and promote initiatives fostering understanding, tolerance, and cooperation.

JMBF remains hopeful that Bangladesh, renowned for its resilience and spirit of unity, will overcome these challenging times.

Thank you.
