Paris, France: 23th July 2023: France-based human rights organization, JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), has expressed deep concern and condemnation regarding the attack and vandalism of idols at four temples in Chaikhgaon, Mahisar, and Rambhadrapur villages of Vedarganj Upazila in Shariatpur.
JMBF has called for exemplary punishment of the accused in a transparent trial under criminal law, who would have been identified and arrested through an impartial investigation into the incident.
JMBF believes that the incident of vandalizing the idols of four temples in Shariatpur and smashing the puja materials in the temple is a direct threat to the basic human rights of citizens living in Bangladesh, such as the right to freely practice their religion.
According to news published in various newspapers and information obtained from reliable sources, it is known that on the night of Monday, July 17, 2023, four temples in Chaikhgaon, Mahisar, and Rambhadrapur villages of Vedarganj Upazila in Shariatpur were attacked, and the idols were vandalized, along with the destruction of worship materials in the temples. On Monday night, the criminals attacked the Kalimandir at the house of Shariatpur District Awami League General Secretary, Anal Kumar, vandalized the idol of Saraswati, and destroyed various puja materials arranged in the temple. On the same night, Shilpa Mandir at the house of Vedarganj Upazila Awami League vice-president, Montu Chandra Das, was attacked, and the idol was vandalized. Additionally, on the night of July 16, Kalimandir in Rambhadrapur village of the same upazila, and the Digashwari Mayer temple in Mahisa village were attacked, according to locals.
In a statement signed by Advocate Shahanur Islam, Founder President of JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) and a prominent human rights lawyer, he expressed deep anger and protest over the vandalism of four Hindu temple idols in Shariatpur.
"The vandalism of the Hindu temple idol in Shariatpur is not an isolated incident but rather the continuation of human rights violations against minorities across the country. The incidents of violence against religious minorities are not decreasing due to the fact that the people responsible for the violation of minority human rights have not been identified and given exemplary punishment," stated Advocate Shahanur Islam.
Advocate Shahanur Islam also urged the concerned authorities to take appropriate measures to ensure an environment in which the minority Hindu community can practice their religion without any fear in the future, including the immediate reconstruction and restoration of the damaged temples and idols.
Additionally, Advocate Shahanur Islam urged the administration to be careful not to harass innocent people due to political revenge in the said incident and to ensure the safety of the lives and property of the minorities with the assurance of freedom of religion and the quick enactment and implementation of the Minority Protection Act.
Above all, Justice Makers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) is always ready to extend any kind of cooperation to the authorities to identify and arrest those responsible and give exemplary punishment in the trial, besides closely monitoring the incident, as mentioned in the statement.
