Police in Comilla have recovered a body of a transgender person from a pair of rail tracks on the Dhaka-Chittagong route. The deceased was identified as Munni, 35, police confirmed on Wednesday morning.
“After killing her, the assailants left the body on the rail tracks at Murapara area of Comilla Sadar upazila,” said Kotwali police station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwarul Haque.
The body had several bruises and was sent to the morgue of Comilla Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, he said.
The post-mortem report would shed light on the details of the murder, the OC concluded.
Laksam Railway police OC Nazim Uddin said locals first reported the body lying on the rail tracks.
However, no immediate arrests were made over the murder.
Transgender people are commonly known as Hijras in Bangladesh and they belong to one of most neglected and under-privileged communities in the country, with a lion’s share of them making a living by begging, extortion or even prostitution.
They are even neglected at educational institutions and by the society at large.
Officially, there are 10,000 hijras in Bangladesh, according to a survey of the Department of Social Services.
However, several private organizations, that are working to protect the rights of the hijra community, estimated that there could be more than 50,000 hijras in the country.
