Shahanur Conducts workshop on Transparency for Human Rights in Bangladesh

CHADPUR, May 31, 2011 
A daylong workshop on “Transparency for Human Rights in Bangladesh” was held on Saturday in Chandpur at the auditorium of Chandpur Press Club, the workshop was organized by the “National Network for the Concerned Journalists” in collaboration with JusticeMakers Bangladesh and Relief International . Advocate Shahanur Islam
, founding secretary general of JusticeMakers conducts the workshop as human rights expert.


The workshop, first of its kind here, was formally inaugurated by the DC Priotose Saha as chief guest while Press Club president Iqram Chowdhury was the special guest and the Press Club’s general secretary B. M. Hannan was the guest of honour.

Delwar Ahmed, Chandpur Correspondent of UNB, presided over the inaugural function. UNB’s Senior Crime Reporter Mohd Jahangir Alam moderated the working session.

A total of 14 male and two female reporters of Bangla dailies of Chandpur district town and seven Upazilas of the district participated in the workshop.

Veteran journalist and UNB’s City Editor Shamsuddin Ahmed, UNB’s Chief of Correspondents Shamim Ahmed, Founding Secretary General of JusticeMakers Bangladesh Adv Shahinul Islam, Mohd Jahangir Alam and Delwar Ahmed were the resource persons in the workshop.


Mr. Islam conducts session on primary concept of human rights, United Nation Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR), Convention Against Torture (CAT), United Nation Declaration of Human Rights Defender as well as role of journalist to protect and promote human rights in grass root level.

In his speech as chief guest, DC Priotose Saha has said that journalism is a very challenging profession. He added that the people of Bangladesh are now very much vocal about human rights in the country. He urged the newsmen to use their pen transparently against the misuse or violation of human rights in their newspapers adding that the present government believes in the free flow of information. He laid special emphasis on more participation of women in the challenging job of journalism.
